This is going to be messy and stuff but I'm a messy person. Maybe I'll clean it up someday. I think I'll start with my interpretation of L'Arachel. I really like this FE-bruary idea, by the way.

People tend to be really insensitive around her and the way she acts just makes it worse. Just...because she does the whole comic relief thing people are slower to consider her feelings and hush up than they are with others. They'll tell all these stories about her parents and paint them in such a ~heroic~ light. She'd probably be better off if she didn't hear so much of it. I guess she feels like she has to be like that, ~purging the land of evil~? If they made it sound gross that would be one thing but she's had fighting monsters glorified to her with wishy-washy concepts like *~love~*, ~*sacrifice*~, and ~*courage*~. Then she'd hear the same things in a religious context too and being descended from Latona...yeah...

I thought the way she seemed so desperate for fame (in her Dozla support and I think it came up in the main story too) was really bizarre for a princess. She's just living in the shadows of all these people and it isn't even easy for her to compare herself to them or see their flaws because they're long dead and even when they were alive they'd have been big shots. I don't think she was neglected, at least not on purpose, but you'd think she'd be happy with the amount of attention she gets. At least at home she should be noticed.

Then...she runs around anonymously and she romanticizes it but it could be that she's just as interested in making a name for herself on her own as she is in living out some fantasy.

She's too obsessed with fame and justice for it to be healthy. I feel like she might get a little too into fighting and lose herself. She already has it in her head that most of her opponents are pure evil. It can't be hard to cross the line into grossly violent from there. And that may be what got me started thinking that she's a big sack of issues.

Also, I feel like Mansel is a pacifist, seeing as all the other other royals were playable post-game. It might be attached to his title. If it is and L'Arachel inherits, I wonder how that would affect her and if she has any feelings about it.

I don't think her entire personality is an act or even close. That's too extreme in just about any case. I think it's more in the background. She either ignores or isn't aware of half of her less-than-good feelings.

I think I got new ideas writing this. Woah. I don't know. I'm not great with words and I don't practice either, so sorry if anything isn't clear enough. I'm lazy, I know.

I can definitely see this!
I relate to L'Arachel (help me), and I know that I have idealized versions of "musical life", for example. And the thing about people like this: If the going gets tough, they keep going. They don't stop, no matter the emotional pain.

I think I just turned this meta into a sob story, oops.

I really like all of this and agree. I also think, based on her Eirika supports, that part of her idealized crusades-of-justice thing is her way of coping with her parents' deaths without really coping with it. If she thinks of them as some glorified heroes and focuses on following their path, she doesn't have to mourn in the way that would cause the grief to come to the surface. I also have to wonder if she's lonely since her parents are gone and she doesn't seem to get close to others.

I do think she's trying to make them proud, for sure. I also feel like the way she lives her life makes it so she can't make many friends. Maybe that's part of why she focuses on her ~justice~ instead which just makes friendship harder and it's a vicious cycle.

+1 to the original post, these are excellent l'arachel thoughts

and i'd never thought about the connection there / similarity between L'Arachel and Saleh's loneliness, but... that's kind of neat! Saleh's def. a character I should think about more, heh ^^;;

One of my favorite characters to write in FE8, since she has to balance some extremely strong convictions with a curious degree of emotional vulnerability.
